's dp day may have been the best moment of his campaign. the selection of paul ryan excited conservatives in a way romney himself had not. how many moems are there in an hour and a half? the president lost all of them in the first debate. the picture tells the story of a panicked man and providing an opening for romney. and finally, the top three moments of the election best described as history-making politics. >> a supreme court decision upholding the constitutionality of obama care. if that doesn't strike you as political, consider what would have happened on the campaign trail if the high court had struck down the president's signature first-term achievement. >> at a certain point, i have concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that i think same-sex couples should be able to get married. >> the first president to endorse same-sex marriage was a daily double moment. good politics aimed at an activist wing of his party base and most certainly history. and finally, the number one political moment of the year is easy during elections.

paul ryan have a bigger ip sensitive, too. and right now, boehner wants to get re-elected speaker, and so he is trying to walk away from the deal as much as possible to not jeopardize the speakership. so he has technically thrown it to the senate. constitutionally it has to go through both houses. >> just constitutional ly. minor detail. >> and boehner is constitutionally dammed because he is getting out of it and burned too much. so if reid and mcconnell can get through the deal that is not filibustered, they have to amend a bill in the house that extends the tax cuts for everybody, and gut that bill, because it has to emerge from there, and then fill it, and hope and pray that boehner can find 30 republicans to vote for it. >> that is the story that you feel when the president is saying that ordinary american citizens can not understand what is happening here and why we can't when there is such broad agreement that we don't want taxes to go up on households under $250 and social entitlements that we need there, and we can't get an agreement. stay there, everybody. i want to get

in terms of how much romney they wanted to show. host: why did he choose congressman paul ryan? guest: to a certain extent he was pressured into doing it by the mainstream republican establishment. i can tell you from the perspective of chicago, i was ridiculed a lot when i reported this, but they were really worried about tim pawlenty and they felt they could deliver some of those midwestern states in a way to ryan did not. ryan did not deliver his home state or even come close. towards the tail end of the campaign, he was not much of a presence. host: the announcement came at 9:00 in the morning, the last day of the olympics. why the timing? why not wait until the following week? if you're going to select congressman ryan, run on the rhine and budget. guest: they wanted to get it in before then but there was the massacre at the sikh temple. what thenow exactly study on why they did not wait, but i think romney saw a lot of himself in ryan. serious, cares about policy and ideas. i think he saw him as someone who could be a respectable running mate to help him politically what you cou
